The players
NABU Hamburg – Naturschutzbund Deutschland, Landesverband Hamburg e.V.
With over 16,000 members (as of August 2006), NABU Hamburg (German Society for Nature Conservation in Hamburg) is the largest non-profit environmental organisation in the city of Hamburg. The 16 city district groups engage in voluntary activities that serve approximately 60 areas. They maintain, develop and create habitats for rare plants and animals. NABU purchases valuable natural areas for the protection of these plants and animals, has implemented targeted measures to protect Hamburg’s storks, cranes, and many other birds, animals and plants and provides tips on how to protect nature in one's garden or on one's balcony. In order to bring the people in the city closer to nature, NABU organises exciting nature tours for thousands of children and adults. These tours help get people acquainted with the plants and animals and make them more aware of their interaction with them. Each year, NABU, Dagmar Berghoff and Globbetrotter Ausrüstung jointly award the “Hanse-Umweltpreis” (Hanseatic Environment Award), which provides incentive and motivation to many volunteer conservationists.
